The Three Petals: Where the Infinite meets the Intimate.
Part 1: The Call for Personal and Global Transformation
In a world overflowing with spiritual content, self-help books, mindfulness apps, thousands of podcasts and scores of wisdom traditions old and new, it’s easy to wonder if there’s anything left to say or if we’re all just repeating the same teachings in different packaging. But I believe that, despite the vast spiritual marketplace, something crucial is still missing from the conversation.
We are living in a time of massive transition, technologically, socially, and even spiritually. The world is more connected than ever, yet people feel more lost, disconnected, and uncertain than they have in generations. There is a globalization of humanity underway, a deepening recognition that we are one species, one planet, one interdependent web of life. But here’s the problem: if we don’t do the inner work, if we don’t heal our personal wounds, break our unconscious patterns, and truly transform ourselves then we bring all of our unresolved baggage into the collective work we so desperately want to be part of. It’s hard to live in peace when there is so much violence going on around us and within us.
That’s why this podcast exists. Not just to talk about awakening, consciousness, or spirituality as abstract ideals, but to explore the real work of transformation, the kind that allows us to show up fully, authentically, and responsibly in the world. This is important because I feel we each have something unique and necessary to bring to the planet, we each have our own truth to share, but we first need to do our personal work, our "Me" work before we can truly engage in the "We" work we feel drawn to. It is in this way we participate in the community of humanity through our wholeness and not our brokenness
This episode is a starting point, an introduction to why this conversation matters now more than ever. And as we explore what’s ahead in this episode, I hope it gives you a sense of where we’re going on this journey together.
Part 2: Introducing Jim
Hello, I’m your host Jim Trofatter and welcome to The Three Petals, a podcast dedicated to exploring the synergy of three essential aspects of spiritual awakening: awareness, embodiment, and relationality. I’m glad you could join me today. This podcast is numbered zero because after I had written and recorded a number of later episodes, I realized that my listeners might want a little more background on why I feel this podcast is important as well as to outline my goals for the arc that the episodes will follow. And since the other episodes had already been numbered, I thought it easiest to just start with zero than modifying all the other recordings.
First, I’d like to give a quick background about myself. I am a former research Geneticist, a playwright, a full teacher in the Trillium Awakening work. I am also a teacher of the Realization Process of Judith Blackstone, a shamanic practitioner of Healing the Lightbody from Alberto Villoldo’s The Four Winds Society and an iConscious coach, a beautiful developmental model created by Ted Strauss and Carole Griggs.
The Three Petals Podcast has been ten years in the making. I have faced a lot of inertia and false starts in the birthing process. For me, the Trillium Awakening path provides a profound embodied awakening by bringing a holistic, down-to-earth approach that embraces our bodies, our emotions, and our relationships as integral parts of our spiritual journey so I wanted to get its basic approach out to as many people as possible. I am glad to say I finally got over my inertia and have set myself the goal of two episodes per month. Each episode will be between 30 and 45 minutes long. And let me say up front that this is not about converting anyone to the Trillium Awakening path, but to use its understandings to shine a light on your own embodied awakening process. This work can be done no matter what path you follow.
Part 3: The Current State of the World and the Need for Spiritual Grounding
We don’t have to look far to see that something feels off in the world today. Anxiety, burnout, and existential uncertainty are skyrocketing. We are more connected digitally than ever before, able to connect to billions of others around the world at any time of the day, yet we have this feeling of desolation, of being deeply alone, unseen, and disconnected. Political and ideological divides continue to widen, and trust in institutions such as governments, religions, corporations, spiritual teachers and even the idea of truth itself, is eroding. We are living in times where anyone can decide that what they think in this moment is the truth even though it goes counter to all the facts that say otherwise, is the truth, even though the world doesn’t support. And unfortunately, many of us are also willing to defend this relative truth with subtle and gross forms of violence such as emotional and psychological intimidation, public shaming, moral superiority, thought policing and demonization of individuals who do not agree with them.
At the same time, there’s an undeniable hunger for something deeper. A part of us knows things are imbalanced and we seek a common ground from which to attend to this imbalance. That is why we are seeing the rise of mindfulness, meditation, energy healing, plant medicine, and non-traditional spirituality practices. More and more we are recognizing that the old paradigms aren’t enough, and we’re searching for something more integrated, more whole, more real. We are searching for something that talks to us in the moment, that can provide insight as opposed to just information. Additionally, there is so much information available that we feel overwhelmed and find it hard to make an informed decision on which path to follow.
And yet, even within the vast spiritual marketplace, something still see to be missing. Much of today’s spirituality is disconnected from real transformation, it either remains too abstract and transcendent, ignoring the real struggles of human life, or it becomes just another self-improvement industry, catering to the ego rather than dismantling it. And from what most spiritual teachers say, the ego is a construct of thoughts making it very fragile. And that is important to understand. Most humans do not have a strong sense of internal unity, of our authentic nature. The ego is subject to the hammer fall of judgment and the vicissitudes of validation by others. In contrast, our authentic nature is rock solid. It recognizes that nothing can impact it, nothing can destroy it. It doesn’t fall apart if someone disagrees with us. It recognizes the wave as simply a wave and it allows it to pass without being affected by the up and down motion of its passing.
If spirituality is to have real relevance in today’s world, it must do more than offer comfort or temporary relief, it must offer a path toward deep, lasting, embodied transformation and realization of our authentic self. And that requires us to look at the full picture of what it means to be human, not just consciousness and transcendence, but our emotions, our bodies, our relationships, and our place in the collective unfolding of the world. That’s what I hope this podcast will offer.
Part 4: The Importance of "Me" Work Before the "We" Work
One of the biggest misconceptions in spirituality is that we can skip over the personal work and jump straight into collective transformation. We see this all the time, where people join movements for social justice, activism, or global cooperation, while bringing all their unresolved trauma, projections, and egoic wounds into the work.
I feel that if we don’t do the "Me" work first, we unconsciously sabotage the "We", collective transformational work. When we haven’t done the "Me" work, our ability to experience expanded consciousness and true unity is severely limited because we are still trapped in the unresolved patterns of the personal self. Instead of opening to the vastness of existence, we remain bound by unexamined fears, unhealed wounds, and conditioned identities that keep us tethered to separation. We may intellectually grasp concepts of oneness, interconnectedness, or non-duality, but if our personal history is still running the show, we will continue to perceive life through the narrow lens of the ego, which thrives on defensiveness, attachment, self-protection and self-righteousness. True unity, whether in mystical experiences, deep relationships, or global consciousness, requires a surrender of the personal filters that distort our perception. If we have not integrated our pain, our survival mechanisms will remain hyperactive, keeping us stuck in reactivity, judgment, and the illusion of otherness. In that state our consciousness cannot reside beyond the unresolved layers of our psyche, because those layers act as barriers, preventing us from fully merging with the greater flow of existence. The deeper we go into self-inquiry, healing, and integration, the more we clear these inner filters that block our direct experiences of unity, presence, and spacious awareness, allowing us to be in greater resonance with those we are working with. This touches on the first of the three petals of this work: consciousness.
Secondly, many people are drawn to leadership not because they truly want to serve, but because they are seeking validation, recognition, a sense of worthiness or they have a deep-seated need to be in control…of everything. If we haven't resolved our personal insecurities, our personal history, we can enter leadership spaces hungry for approval, needing others to affirm our intelligence, spiritual depth, or moral righteousness. Exploring our broken zones is vital at this point. Being able to sit with our unprocessed psychological history is paramount to moving beyond these insecurities and inner landmines that blow up when we least expect them, throwing us into emotional turmoil, drama and crisis. True leadership is not about filling a personal void, it’s about creating space for others to thrive. But if we haven't done the inner work to feel whole and secure within ourselves, we risk using leadership as a means of self-importance rather than a means of empowerment for all. This touches on the second petal of this work: embodiment.
Another area of our life that is affected if we haven’t done our “Me” work is in our relationships. Every relationship, whether romantic, platonic, familial, or professional, acts as a mirror, reflecting back our deepest wounds and patterns. If we haven’t done the inner work to process past betrayals, abandonment wounds, childhood conditioning, or attachment insecurities, we bring those unconsciously into our relationships, causing unnecessary struggle. This creates cycles of misunderstanding, conflict, and emotional exhaustion, when, in reality, the deeper issue is an internal one that needs to be addressed at its root. Healthy relationship fosters the empowerment of others and acknowledges that others have as much to contribute as we do. This touches on the third petal of the work: relationality.
Collective movements whether social, political, spiritual, or environmental, are meant to bring people together around a shared vision of progress. They create a We-space in which we can bring our unique gifts and contribute with others to the betterment of humanity. But when individuals enter these spaces without having examined their own fears, biases, and shadow aspects, they can unintentionally recreate the very divisions they aim to dismantle. Movements fail when they become more about individual emotional catharsis than collective wisdom and action. True unity requires deep inner work, an ongoing process of questioning: Am I acting from love or from fear? Am I responding to the present moment, or am I reliving past trauma? Can I open my heart and mind a little more in this moment rather than go into psychological free fall?
When we skip the "Me" work, when we try to change the world before confronting our own shadows, we risk polluting collective spaces with unhealed individual struggles. But when we take the time to truly know ourselves, to examine our wounds, to dismantle our own conditioning, we bring something cleaner, more conscious, and more whole into every interaction, every relationship, and every movement we participate in. If we want to build a better world, we must first do the deep, courageous work of transforming ourselves. Only then can we show up in a way that is authentic, self-aware, and truly capable of contributing to meaningful change.
And truth be told, the work we do within ourselves is not separate from the work we do in the world. And if we truly wish to build a more conscious, cooperative, and awakened humanity, we must be willing to go deep within before trying to change what’s outside of us. This is what I hope to do with this podcast. To explore a deeper understanding of ourselves so that we can compassionately heal our past to create a better future with others.
Part 5: A Glimpse at What’s Ahead
This podcast is not about quick fixes or spiritual bypassing. It’s about real transformation, the kind that allows you to live, love, and engage with the world more fully. I currently have over 80 episodes planned. There will be trajectory to this work. It will unfold slowly. The beginning episodes will introduce you to those topics I feel are foundational concepts, that will provide context for future episode talking about the transformative path. These episodes will also show you how I see the world and use words to describe it. These are my understandings, they are pointers to a larger reality but are still limited by words and social constructs.
I can’t give you an exact number on how many episodes this will take because it seems to keep changing. I’m trying to be as thorough as possible and like this episode, a new idea for an episode may arise while developing another episode. After the foundational episodes, we will explore what it’s like to walk a spiritual journey from start to finish, even though I’ll say this at the very beginning, the transformational journey never truly ends. I say this because the further you walk along the path, the more you realize that you are always just touching the tip of the iceberg that is infinity. Totality is the sum of everything that exist, that potentially can exist and that even doesn’t exist. It has been described as the Infinite for a good reason. It means you can never truly know everything. Luckily over time, we become comfortable with the mystery and the not knowing and come to realize that the Mystery is all there is anyway so why not get comfortable with it.
This brings me to the next point, you do not have to believe in any form of deity to walk the path of personal transformation and evolution. I will say that there may come a time on this path when something that feels “beyond” is experienced that paradoxically feels both personal and impersonal. Some might rush to name this God, others just feel a sense of sacredness and divinity, and some would simply describe it as an intimate connection with Nature. This might be associated with a profound opening and expansion of the heart space, but there is no requirement that you have this experience. It is wise to allow the possibility of anything to arise even though you don’t believe in anything more. I won’t be focusing on any one spiritual tradition but will bring in aspects of other systems to help make a point or to highlight a potentiality. Remember, the Mystery contains all experience so the potentiality for such a profound experience is possible, but not necessary.
Part 6: Parts 1 through 4
I currently have this work separated into seven major segments. The first part lays the foundation for all the other sections. I will explore the three petals of this work: consciousness, embodiment and relationality from multiple perspectives. When your mind is given new perspectives on how to possibly look at the world, it will begin to question your current reality to see how it can fit any different perspectives into its current structure of Reality. The foundational episodes will fulfill the mind’s need to learn and grow and it will start deeper unconscious processes that will begin to heal disharmonious conditioning and beliefs, so that new potentialities can be lived in the body and not just realized by the mind.
The second major part of this podcast series will look at where you might be starting from at this time. I call this part Beginning the Walk. Some people have done years of work and may not feel the need to listen to these episodes. I will say to them, it doesn’t hurt to hear and experience old concepts from a different point of view. I found from my own experience that it helped deepening my sense of embodiment and understanding. Others of you will just be starting out and will need an orientation of how to walk the path from where you are so that you can get to your initial awakening, which believe it or not, is just the beginning of the awakening journey. Though some will claim they are now fully enlightened when they have this initial awakening. It’s a nice thought but doesn’t represent Reality. Remember, you are Mystery, and you can never fully or even partially know the Totality of your Self.
The third major section looks at the awakening process from the point of view that it just happened and what is going to happen after that. I call this the Early Integration episodes. Unfortunately, you typically do not awaken to full enlightenment, but rather to a deeper sense of embodiment. All the psychological and emotional stuff is still there, but now you have a better capacity and clarity to work with it. In the Trillium Awakening work to which I belong, we find that this unwinding of information can be quite intense for a couple of years. We call it the Sacred Reconfiguration. It is during this time that a lot of your past traumas are healed and released, but I will preface this by saying that not everything happens in these first couple of years. Sometimes deeper integration is necessary before we have the capacity to release particularly intense traumatic events. For some this might not happen for another 20 years.
The fourth major part section is called the Intermediate Exploration. In most mystical traditions, they say that after you have a certain level of awakening, you need to integrate this into your daily life. They call this time bringing it back to the marketplace, that aspect of your life that is relational. This has a number of benefits. First, as you begin to express the gifts you inherently have as an awakened individual, you will find a place to use them, but also, it is in relationship that anything that has not been healed will be revealed. This can be a highly creative time and somewhat frustrating, because even though we thought we had cleared up all our crap, there apparently still seems to be a lot there. But because of your initial awakening, you can more easily track when unprocessed material is arising and work with it in real-time. This is quite profound and humbling at the same time. I found myself doing a lot of apologies at this time and I still do. We have a lot of familial and cultural training that is subtle, yet quite violent and this is the time to start dismantling those behaviors.
Part 7: Parts 5 through 7
The fifth major part of this podcast is called Advanced Topics. At some point in our journey through the Intermediate Exploration we realize that we are no longer preoccupied with our past, but more focused on the present. That doesn’t mean that the past traumas and conditioning are gone, but that they no longer interfere with our ability to be present with ourselves and those around us. There is great freedom in this and a sense of flow, moving us with the rhythm of Life. The aspect of our being with all the problems seems to be in the background more than the foreground. It also means that instead of seeking, we begin exploring. What does it mean to be an authentic human freed from their past conditioning and pain? What is Totality, Reality, whatever you want to call it, and how can I begin to explore it? Now, we open to the mystery and interestingly enough, the mystery graciously opens up to greet us. This can be a time of profound synchronicity and insight where the Universe seems to support us as opposed to the feeling that it was against us which we might have felt earlier in the journey.
The sixth major section is called Deeper Embodiment. My personal belief at this time, meaning the current time in the evolution of humanity, is that the Universe is trying to see how many dimensions of Reality it can actually embody. What do I mean by this? Many traditions as well as quantum physics claim that other than our four-dimensional space-time reality, there are other dimensions that reside at more subtle levels within us. Typically, they are so subtle, that to actually live from them you would have to be some form of energy being, because a human could not contain the infinite energy and intensity that they represent. I believe that we are trying to incarnate as many dimensions as possible as human beings. This will happen over centuries of time as societies and the world wakes up and human bodies become more refined in their capacity to handle increased energies flowing through their nervous and energetic systems. However, we can experience this in real time as we move from stage to stage of the developmental pathway which always involves an increase of energy flowing through our systems. Also, the potentiality of living as a single species of humans as opposed to the divisive nature in which we live with each other at this time will be explored during this part. What if the Earth is actually a single intelligence in its own right and we are part of that intelligence? The human body-mind is a unique cell in the body of the complex eco-Being that we call Earth or Gaia. But to surrender our consciousness to that field requires a great level of personal integration, otherwise we would lose our identity when we surrendered to the global mind. And this work is about attaining that level of integration, because this is where I think we are going as a species. That sounds a little scary because the implications of us all sharing a single mind-field can feel like a minefield where things can blow up at any moment.
The seventh and last section is called Mastery and Legacy. We are growing up as a species. The chaos and turmoil that is currently arising on the planet is indicative of when old systems are falling apart but new systems are not quite yet in place. Part of this requires that we grow up. As Bill Plotkin, an ecopsychologist, has said, we don’t have enough true adults and elders on this planet to sustain adequate growth of the individual, especially our youth. He sees humans as developmentally adolescent, if not younger, no matter our current age. This work is about finding your purpose, your mastery of yourself, your re-connection to Gaia, Mother Earth, your unique expression as a human being, your adult nature. This part explores the potentiality of being authentically human.
Part 8: A Taste of Things to Come
We live in a world that often seeks instant transformation, whether through a book, a retreat, a psychedelic experience, or a social movement that promises to "fix" everything. But real transformation, the kind that allows you to live, love, and engage with the world in a deep, integrated way, takes time, commitment, and courage. It’s about doing the work, facing the hard truths, and allowing growth to unfold organically rather than chasing a fleeting moment of enlightenment. In the episodes ahead, we’ll be exploring a wide range of topics that touch on the personal, the relational, and the collective dimensions of awakening. Here’s a glimpse of what’s to come:
In some of the foundational episodes we’ll explore what is meant by consciousness and awareness, how do others view it and how we can explore our conscious nature. We’ll also explore the word "awakening" which gets thrown around a lot in spiritual circles, what does it really mean? Is it just a shift in perception, or something deeper? We’ll explore how awareness is more than just seeing through illusions, it’s about embodying presence, engaging with life directly, and integrating expanded consciousness into daily existence.
In the episodes on Relationality, we’ll look at relationality across time as well as present day and delve into the dynamics of projection, attachment, and trauma that effect our everyday relationships. So much of our suffering, whether in personal relationships, communities, or global conflicts, stems from our unconscious wounds and conditioned patterns. If we don’t recognize how past experiences shape our present reactions, we’ll continue to repeat the same cycles of dysfunction in new forms. We’ll explore how projection works, how attachment styles affect relationships, and how unhealed trauma manifests in everything from our personal choices to social movements.
They’ll be episodes on Emotional Intelligence and Relational Maturity because spirituality doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Many people seek spirituality as an escape, but true awakening is about being more engaged with life, not detached from it. That means learning how to navigate emotions, develop healthy relationships, and communicate with clarity and compassion. We’ll discuss how emotional intelligence is just as crucial as spiritual insight, because without it, awakening remains fragmented, disconnected, and incomplete.
The exploration of the integration of body, mind, and relationality will permeate each episode because this work always looks at the path from the point of view of the three petals. Too often, spiritual teachings emphasize transcendence, rising above the body, emotions, and worldly concerns, but real awakening happens when we fully inhabit our human experience. That means learning how to be grounded in the body, how to feel emotions fully without being consumed by them, and how to allow the mind, heart, and spirit to function in harmony rather than at odds with one another.
I even have an episode called “What if it’s just this?” which explores the path from the point of view that perhaps physical reality is all there really is and everything else is just a bunch of malarky. What if we’re just human beings having a human experience on a lone planet floating through the cosmos at sixty-seven thousand miles per hour and that that’s it. No god, no aliens, no magical kingdoms, no angels, guides, only one life, no reincarnation, no existence after we die or whatever. Just humans living a singular life with eight billion other people. Would we still walk a path of personal transformation? And if so, why bother?
Those are just a few of the topics we’ll be exploring. Each episode will go beyond abstract philosophy, exploring current models and understandings of social dynamics as well as offering practical insights, real conversations, and grounded reflection on what it means to be awake, embodied, and engaged in the world. This isn’t just about thinking differently, it’s about living differently. If you’re ready to explore what it truly means to be alive, aware, and in relationship with yourself, others, and the world, then this journey is for you. Let’s step into it together.
Part 9: Why Meditation is an Essential Part of This Podcast
One of the unique aspects of The Three Petals is that each episode will have a meditation before the closing remarks, and there’s a very intentional reason for that. Spiritual exploration isn’t just about concepts, theories, and intellectual understanding, it’s about direct experience. We can talk about transformation, awareness, and relational growth all day, but until we actually sit with ourselves, feel into our bodies, and engage consciousness in a present, embodied way, these ideas remain just that, ideas.
Meditation serves as a bridge between learning and integration. When we take time at the end of each episode to drop into stillness, reflection, and direct awareness, we shift from thinking about these concepts to actually experiencing them in real-time. Whether we’re discussing personal healing, relational dynamics, expanded consciousness, or embodied spirituality, meditation allows us to feel where these things are alive within us, where they might be blocked, and how we can cultivate deeper awareness in our own lives.
Additionally, meditation helps to rewire the nervous system, moving us out of the overactive mental chatter of daily life and into a state of grounded presence and coherent brain activity. Many of the topics we’ll explore, such as projection, emotional wounds, personal transformation, and expanded awareness, require a level of internal attunement that can’t be accessed purely through thought. The closing meditations serve as a few minutes to integrate, it is a space where you’re invited to pause, breathe, and embody the insights of the episode before carrying them forward into your daily life.
So, as you listen to The Three Petals, I invite you not just to engage with these ideas intellectually, but to commit to exploring them through direct experience. These meditations are not just a way to end the episode, they are an essential part of bringing these teachings to life within you. The transition to the meditation will be preceded by a chime and followed by a chime when it ends. This is different than the other transitions you’ve been hearing throughout this podcast.
Part 10: Meditation
As we close this first episode of The Three Petals, I want to invite you into a simple meditation, a way to transition from listening to integration, from thought to direct experience. This is a grounding practice, something you can return to anytime you feel scattered, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself. Don’t do this if you’re driving a car or working dangerous machinery…First, find a comfortable position…Let your body settle in your chair or on the ground and feel as if you have roots that extend down into the Earth…Close your eyes if you feel safe to do so otherwise keep your eyes open…Begin by taking a few deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth and allow the exhales to be just a little bit longer than the inhales… Feel how the breath touches the inside of your body from top to bottom, side to side and front to back. Do not do anything to change what is happening, just be with the breath…As you continue to breathe allow each inhale to deepen your internal contact with yourself…Feel that the breath begins to touch all areas of your internal space. Just notice that space…Now without leaving your body, just notice the space that surrounds you…The space to you left…The space to your right…the space in front of you…the space behind you… the space above you…and the space below you…Notice that the space inside you seems continuous with the space around you. It is. Ultimately, you are the space…See if you can experience the space of the walls around you, not the walls themselves but the space in which the walls reside…How much further can you experience that sense of space? Explore for a few moments…Now begin to bring yourself back into the room and into body…Sit with the sensations of the body and realize you are both the space and your body…When you’re ready, take three conscious deep breaths and gently open your eyes maintaining that intimate contact with your body.
Part 11: Closing Thoughts
So why another spiritual podcast? Because this conversation is needed, now more than ever, everywhere, by everyone. We are at a crossroads. The world is changing, and we are being called to meet this moment with awareness, wisdom, and depth. Not just for our own sake, but for the future of human connection, cooperation, and evolution. But we can’t meet this moment if we are still trapped in unconscious cycles, carrying old wounds, or seeking transformation as an escape rather than an integration. We need to do the personal work before we can truly engage in the collective work. That’s what The Three Petals are all about.
And please remember that even though I have set number of episodes at this time, I already have thought of dozens more. Hopefully the number of major sections will remain the same over time. I will announce in a particular episode when we have moved on to a new section. At this time, with over eighty episodes at two per month, I foresee at least three years to get all the material out. I hope you’ll be engaged enough to follow me in this particular exploration of our human potential.
I invite you to join me on this journey. Most importantly, bring yourself fully to the conversation, bring your insights, your struggles and your wisdom. This is a space for real engagement, and I’m excited to explore this path with you.
If any of this this resonates with you, I encourage you to subscribe, share this podcast, and leave a review. Until next time, remember: Awakening isn’t something you achieve. It’s something you allow.
